PINOLE, Contra Costa County — October 24, 2026. Drivers who use Appian Way across Interstate 80 have a major traffic change approaching. The City of Pinole reports that Caltrans plans a 55-hour closure of the entire Appian Way overcrossing starting at 9 p.m. Friday, November 13 and ending at approximately 4 a.m. Monday, November 16, 2026. The weekend closure is intended to establish a temporary configuration for the longer closure of the southbound bridge.

Why Caltrans needs the shutdown

According to Pinole’s October 19 municipal notice, work is planned to replace and widen the north abutment of the southbound Appian Way overcrossing. The city says that during the November 13–16 shutdown both northbound and southbound bridge traffic will be barred, and people walking or cycling will not be permitted to use the overcrossing. Traffic is to be routed through alternate connections, with details dependent on signs and the final Caltrans plan.

What happens after the weekend?

The city’s notice says the northbound span will temporarily carry one lane in each direction when the initial closure ends, while the southbound span remains closed for longer construction work, expected through spring 2027. The city also describes right-turn-only restrictions at some Appian Way ramps. Those are scheduled future controls, not an assertion that they are already active on October 24.

The city’s page gives inconsistent times for exactly when the extended southbound closure begins: one section says 4 a.m. and another says 4 p.m. Monday, November 16. Drivers should therefore confirm the precise switch-over using Caltrans or on-site controls before their journey; California58 will not select one conflicting time as definitive.

Planning for transit, deliveries and walking

Businesses and households near Appian Way may need to reconsider delivery times, school transport and commutes during the weekend shutdown. The notice says pedestrian and bicycle access will be available on the northbound span during the later two-way traffic arrangement, but not during the full initial closure. People should verify any updated detour maps and accessibility measures as the project approaches.

Where to obtain current information

Caltrans provides QuickMap for current road conditions and construction alerts. The city recommends signing up for Appian Way project alerts, watching posted temporary signs and reporting concerns to the Caltrans project hotline at 510-286-0319. Work remains subject to weather and construction schedules, so dated projections may change.
